June 13, 2024

As Hentons commemorates a significant milestone of 15 years for Gary Olding, Partner and Minu Bhimsaria, Director, we take a moment to reflect on their journey, achievements, and the invaluable contributions they’ve made to the firm. In this interview, Gary and Minu share their insights, experiences, and advice.

Reflecting on your 15-year journey at Hentons, what are some of the most memorable moments or achievements that stand out to you, and how have they shaped your career and the company?

Gary Olding: Most of my most memorable moments come from the people I have worked with and funny things they have said or done.

Silly nights out with the team and ridiculous in-jokes that arise from years of sitting next to the same people are also highlights. It’s true that Hentons is about people, and I’ve worked with some of the best!

Minu Bhimsaria: Several memorable moments and achievements come to mind, in particular when my clients are extremely appreciative of the help and service they receive – making my work feel very rewarding.

We have a strong team within Hentons and it feels like a family. There were some emotional moments where some of my long-standing colleagues who were also my close friends moved onto other jobs. It is also so good to see some of the juniors who I have trained, flourish and do extremely well in their career.

2. Over the past decade and a half, the industry has seen significant changes and advancements. How has Hentons adapted to these changes, and what role have you played in driving innovation and growth within the company?

Gary Olding: One of the biggest changes I have seen during my time at Hentons is the rapid growth that we have seen in the business. Regarding the national tax service, I have collaborated with other offices to deliver services to their clients, which has occasionally been demanding.

Forging positive relationships with key stakeholders in the firm has enabled us to share ideas and understand each other to drive a unified service to clients.

We have also seen a huge shift toward individuals working from home and associated remote working technology such as Teams. I’ve had to drive change in the way we work with clients and review our files, transitioning away from a reliance on a clients’ paper records to review files.

Technology changes continue to impact our day-to-day processes such as the introduction of PCSE online for our medical work and the upcoming introduction of MTD for individuals putting renewed pressure on our ability to adapt and evolve as a business.

Legislation changes also have a huge impact on the way we work such as recent HMRC emphasis shift on dividend payments and who knows what a potential change in government will bring. Answers on a postcard please, to the usual address…

Minu Bhimsaria: One of the most notable changes was our early adoption of digital transformation over the last few years. This not only streamlined our internal processes but also enhanced the accuracy and efficiency of our services, leading to higher client satisfaction.

3. As you celebrate this milestone, what advice would you give to new employees joining Hentons about building a successful and fulfilling career here? What qualities do you believe are essential for long-term success at the firm?

Gary Olding: I think it’s important to approach everything with a sense of humour. Look for opportunities to get involved in things that are outside of your current responsibilities and volunteer to help out. Demonstrating a can-do attitude and striving to do the best for the business will get you noticed.

The managers and partners are here to help support you so speak to them if you have problems. Try and remember that partners of the firm are people too and really do mean well and want the best for you.

Minu Bhimsaria: Success at any place is built on teamwork; collaborating effectively with your colleagues, sharing knowledge, and supporting each other’s growth. In my experience building and maintaining strong relationships with clients is crucial. A successful accountant should strive to understand the clients’ needs, provide excellent service, and establish trust.

As Gary and Minu celebrate their 15-year journey at Hentons, their dedication, resilience, and commitment to excellence serve as an inspiration to us all. Here’s to many more years of success and growth!
