Curtain Call: TaleGate Theatre Productions Steals the Spotlight

June 24, 2024

TaleGate Theatre Productions have been dazzling family audiences up and down the UK for over a decade.

Artistic Director, James Worthington, founded the company in 2009 upon graduating from the University of Leeds with a BA in Theatre and Performance. His degree, based in the inspiring surroundings of Bretton Hall, equipped him with all the tools to run a theatre company the way he does today and much of TaleGate’s work is done in-house.

Alongside Managing Director Philip Ward, TaleGate Theatre Productions take care of all their own marketing, script writing, costumes, props and scenery and are renowned for their top-quality aesthetics and friendly, approachable service.

James’ main driver in forming the company was to create paid acting opportunities for Northern-based actors, including himself. As his alter ego, self-titled minor celebrity of Yorkshire, Dame James, he has appeared as the Dame in every TaleGate pantomime from Dame Trott to Widow Twankey!

“I became Managing Director for TaleGate Theatre in 2013 and it has been a privilege to watch our company thrive and expand over the last 10 years. We’re a resilient, ambitious company and during Covid-19 we diversified to digital work and continued to flourish despite such a difficult environment. Post-pandemic, we continue to grow and develop our provision and it’s a truly exciting time to be a part of all things TaleGate Theatre! Within my role at TaleGate I utilise my art background creating our many sets & props and my role is always varied with work ranging from bookkeeping, programming and sales all the way through to technical provision for performances! We get to work with the best people you will ever meet and I look forward to our exciting future.” said Phillip.

TaleGate Theatre has produced work in numerous theatres up and down the UK including long-standing Christmas pantomime contracts with Aberdeen Arts Centre, Cleethorpes and Beverley Parkway, Sutton Coldfield Town Hall and MMC Venues. They are also about to embark on their third Christmas season in the West End with their musical adaptation of Nicholas Allan’s much-loved book ‘Father Christmas Needs A Wee’ and they work regularly with schools, museums and pop-up venues.

In addition to their Christmas provision, TaleGate Theatre Productions have written and produced an array of family musicals including ‘The Giant’s Loo Roll’, ‘The Queen’s Knickers’ and their most recent show, ‘Goose’, is about to head to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August. Upcoming shows also include their much-loved Summer ‘Panto In The Park’ performances, visiting the sumptuous surroundings of venues such as Kirkstall Abbey, Clumber Park and Kings’ Park in James’ hometown of Retford!

The third instalment of their hilarious Halloween parody ‘Harry Panto’ is flying into venues this October and then before they know it, it’ll be Christmas all over again with titles including Dick Whittington, Beauty & The Beast, The Snow Queen, Robin Hood and the Wizard of Oz delighting families across the UK!

Richard Munoz Head of SME at Hentons reflected on the successes TaleGate Theatre has achieved to date: “I enjoy dealing with TaleGate, its interesting and slightly different to your everyday SME. We support in solving tax issues to free up time for James to concentrate on doing what he does best. Our professional relationship ensures that James and his team’s creative talent shines through in making great theatre productions while my team at Hentons keeps a watchful eye on the financial reporting side, keeping it shipshape.”
