In our latest interview, Marketing Executive, Laura Dinu, is joined by Neil Jones, Director at Hentons, celebrating an impressive 34 years in practice. Join us as we explore Neil’s journey, memorable experiences, and invaluable advice for those embarking on a career in this dynamic field.

Laura: Neil, congratulations on your 34 years in practice! That’s quite an accomplishment. Can you tell us about your journey, starting from when you joined the smaller firm back in April 1990?

Neil: Thank you. Yes, it’s been quite the journey. I started fresh out of college, joining a smaller firm back in April 1990. It was a part of a small business environment, and I’ve been with them since. When the audit regime for smaller companies came into effect in 1992, I was involved in setting up their audit systems. Over time, I worked my way up to become a Partner. In 1995, I officially became a Partner and continued to grow alongside John Meyer, gradually expanding our reach. About a year and a half ago, I transitioned to Hentons.

Laura: That’s impressive growth throughout your career. Could you share some highlights or memorable experiences?

Neil: Absolutely. One of the highlights of my career has been working closely with various clients. I’ve had the privilege of guiding many through the startup process, helping them secure funding, and supporting their growth from inception to becoming substantial companies. It’s immensely fulfilling to witness their journey and contribute to their success. For instance, I’ve assisted clients in structuring employee ownership schemes, facilitating management buyouts, and transitioning to employee ownership trusts. Additionally, supporting clients through the lifecycle of their businesses, from inception to closure, has been incredibly rewarding. Moreover, building and nurturing a talented team has been a significant part of my journey. It’s the people that truly make the experience worthwhile. Now, being part of Hentons, it feels like being part of a bigger family.

Laura: It sounds like you’ve had quite a diverse range of experiences. Can you share any particularly memorable events or challenges you’ve faced over the years?

Neil: Certainly. Over the years, I’ve navigated through various economic downturns and challenges, including epidemics. Despite these hurdles, we’ve managed to persevere and even find moments of joy, like our annual Christmas parties. Another memorable event was the Meyer Williams Charity Ball, where we raised significant funds for charity. It was heartening to see our clients actively participating and contributing. These events not only strengthened our bonds with clients but also stressed the importance of giving back to the community.

Laura: With such extensive experience, what advice would you give to those starting their career in this field?

Neil: One piece of advice I’d offer is to prioritise building relationships and understanding your clients’ needs. Our profession is built on trust, and developing strong personal connections is key to success. Additionally, attention to detail is crucial, as even the smallest oversight can have significant consequences. Lastly, never underestimate the importance of your team. It’s the collective efforts of individuals that drive success. Take the time to know your staff and foster a supportive work environment. After all, it’s the people who ultimately make the difference.

Laura: Thank you, Neil, for sharing your insights and congratulations again on your remarkable career.

Neil: My pleasure. Thank you for having me.
